Designer Frida Giannini’s nautical notions on the last Gucci Menswear Spring Summer 2015 in Milan has glaringly brought into the forefront of our eyes that white-on-white has boarded the sartorial boat again after it last sailed years before.
While it certainly looks good on the catwalk, we don’t know if it also translates well in real life.
The not-so-practical issue
This one’s the forefront concern of all the lads out there. Absolutely, white is the color of sophistication and regality. The one that says you could be on the A lists, sipping wine on the deck of a private yacht.
However, this look could be snatched before you can even don on your white double-breasted suit jacket. A small spill or very few crumples can easily be seen in white and can – certainly – transform you from a dashing debonair with a wicked smile to a fumbling klutz of a disgrace.
White is picky
White can be more picky than your four-year old brother or your 85-year old grandmother. It is certainly choosy on who should wear it and when it should be worn. White is one of the color’s best picks for summer, however, it is not your all-around guy for your planned summer activities.
While neat shirts and crisp chinos look good for you on deck, just stay there and don’t try wearing it anywhere else – unless all your planning to do is sit around and sipping wine. But if you’re in an activity that involves too much sweat, save your white-on-white on for another occasion.
Choosing white, you should also put into consideration your body built. If you’re on the slimmer side, then white is for you – just be sure you’re not so pale you blend with your attire.
However, if you already have broad shoulders or worse, bulging stomach, please skip white-on-white. It adds an extra bulk to your frame and I’m sure you don’t want to look like Elvis Presley during his time when he was already busting out of his Catsuit.
But if you still wanna wear it…
Here are the simple tips I could impart to you if you still want to don on the white-on-white. Please stick to the basic and keep it simple. The outfit itself is a statement enough; you won’t want the end product if you added any more than that. Stay away from metallic or shiny accessories, because we can already see you miles away without an added bling.
Keep in mind, too, what’s the look you’re going for. You want to look like the modern day prince here, or just a simple dashing gentleman. It’s enough reminders for you not to wear pair it with bright yellow, or pumpkin orange, or lime green, or… you get what I mean.
Instead, choose colors that will properly tone down the impact of an over-all white outfits. Some piping on cuffs or lapels just like in Frida Giannini’s SS15 will also help break down the impact.
And lastly, since you already have the guts to wear such fashion statement, justify it with the right gusto and swagger.
