There is nothing more refreshing than men wanting to stand out in the world of fashion. In this planet where women dominate and the utter matriarchal ambience is really felt, we normally find ourselves smiling as we saw men sashaying catwalks for specific brands. Men nowadays are more empowered with choices in what they can wear. They are now aggressive with toying on loud palettes of colors, the bulky garments of clothing and the most unimaginable accessories unknown to be worn by men in general. One unforgettable moment when men jumped off the cliff for the love of fashion is when they wore boots — more than the usual purpose, but for the sake of styling.
Dr. Martens had been one of the most famous footwear brands that both men and women subscribe to nowadays for their ample dose of boot fashion. More commonly known as DMs, Doc Martens or Docs, this United Kingdom-based clothing and boot line that have been supplying the world with air-cushioned soles, or famously dubbed as Bouncing Soles, welted construction and the known white and yellow stitches.
Because of the unfortunate ankle incident that Dr. Klaus Martens acquired during the World War II and due to the uncomfortability that his standard army boots have been giving-off, he crafted the now famous DM Boots during the time that he’s curing his foot injury. The first ever Dr. Martens boot prototype is made from soft leather, air-padded soles from tires and the simplest way of constructing it through manual stitching.
After the demise of the war, Klaus Martens ventured out in extending his market upon the creating of his first pair of boots and collaborated with a university friend, Dr. Herbert Funck in 1947. The two have expanded the line into other parts of Germany and neighboring cities, with women comprising 80% of total sales at its first release.
Five years after they have tested the waters for boots demand, they have opened their very first factory in Munich. Because of their recorded sales in 1952 to 1959, they have entered international trade. British shoe mogul, R. Griggs Group Limited bought patented rights to mass produce the shoes in the whole United Kingdom. Griggs then made few alterations to the original look by reshaping the heel for better fitting added the trademark yellow and white stitching and put branding on the soles as AirWair.
The popularity of Doc Martens boots has extended through workers such as postmen, police officers and factory workers, By the early 1970s, a lot more people have recognized the brand as something they can wear for comfort. Musicians from the 1980s era have made it more known and the youth have hugged the style of boots wearing as they moved along with their music idols. Punks, new wave artists, grunge singers and scooter riders have been identified as responsible in propagating the DM wave in fashion.
Currently, Dr. Martens stores are scattered all over the world carrying not only the traditional boots for men and women, but also clothing, caps, jeans, accessories and other types of footwear that still carries the air-cushioned soles. The products that Dr. Martens are currently mass-producing gave-off a vintage feel of it, and fashion mongers from all over the planet put this as a staple in their general wardrobe.
