Style Guide: The Collar Job

Often neglected, the collar is as important as the garment’s cut and pattern for creating a certain look of illusion into one’s appearance.

Who would have thought that this small wing hanging on the neck also has a say of its own when it comes to dictating the overall appearance of a wardrobe ensemble?

Since the collar is close to the face, its main task is to frame the face, highlight the facial structure – the right way while deemphasizing the rest of attributes that needs hiding.

Anatomy: Dissecting Parts

To better understand collars, we have to know what completes this specific part of the garment.

Collar Points – The triangular tip of the collar

Collar Point Length – The size of the gap from collar points where they meet the collar band

Collar Band – The band that wraps around the neck

Collar Height – The height of the folded collar as it hangs in the neck

Tie Space – Width between the top of the folded collar part when the shirt is unbuttoned

Spread – Size between collar points

Here are some of the popular styles of collars.

Button Down Collar
Ideal to achieve the sporty look. The type of collar that is secured by small buttons at the very tip of each collar point.

Cut Away Collar
The type wherein points are pulled back to the side that exposes most of the upper shirt area. This cut is ideal to pair with tie because of the wide width it leaves between collar points.

The Tab Collar
Collar tabs are being closed together, usually by hook and loop closure that creates a neat look.

Club Collar
Distinct for its round edges, this style of collar is good with those who has thin faces.

The Band Collar
Technically the absence of collar points. It is just a band that stands and encircles around the neck.

Straight Collar
Also tagged as universal collar. This has a narrow space between two collar points.
