The classic favorite slip-ons just had reinvention as Vans teamed up with the international Japanese painter Takashi Murakami to give this go-to comfortable footwear a punch of fun and youthful vibe.
Self-confessed Vans fan, Murakami admitted that slip-ons are his personal favorite amongst the brand’s design line. “For the past 10-plus years, without exaggeration, I have been wearing Vans slip-ons almost every single day,” he says. “For me, there are no other shoes that are so comfortably wearable that let me focus on producing my artwork.”
Murakami has been known for his ‘Superflat’ aesthetic – a term he coined himself. This later on becaming a postmodern art movement that shows flattened forms of art found in animation, pop culture and fine arts that tackles generalities in post Japanese war.
Each design is definitely an artwork itself. Showcasing Murakami’s staple blueprint when it comes to his masterpieces, each piece exhibits smiling Kauai flowers and skull patterns. The collection is under Vault by Vans which happens to be the brand’s premium label.
The global release of this full scale collection happened June 27. The collection didn’t end with sneakers because the said team up is going to be visible on skate decks and apparels as well.
Vans has been in the market since 1966. It’s been a favorite of, not only by skate boarders, but of those who seek comfort on everyday walking as well. It was just a local brand that creates shoes for different fields in sports until Sean Penn wore a pair back in 1982 in the film Fast times at Ridgemont High.
The expansion of this brand jumpstarted in 1994 when they decided to do footwear overseas manufacturing. With the continuous pursuit of strengthening the business by marketing internationally and hosting sponsorships and events, Vans then was named by Forbes as one of America’s Best Small Companies in 2001.
Nearly fifty years and counting, Vans have become the trusted brand that dons a never fading appeal even to the younger breed.
