Designer Betsey Johnson was born in 1942, yet she still has the stamina of doing cartwheels at the end of her fashion shows. Surprised? Well, that’s Johnson for you. Her baby-doll blonde hair and wide grin which will either have you smiling or shaking your head (or both) will always make her stand out amidst and despite the busy, fast, and dimmed lights of fashion weeks.
Her personality matches her collection, too. Many times considered over the top, too girly, and too embellished, Betsey Johnson knows no boundaries when it comes to style. But that is fashion for you – pushing boundaries, recycling old for fresh takes, and dipping toes in untried waters. And Johnson certainly takes advantage of that conception. Her ideas are whimsical and girlish.
It evokes a stroll down the park under the shades of trees and singing birds during one sunny day while wearing your pink dress and licking your favorite two scoop bubblegum-flavored ice cream – one sweet dream of one simple child.
However, it is not always smiles and sunshine for the quirky designer. She started off as an intern in Mademoiselle Magazine, then an in-house designer, until she finally opened her own line at 1978. Even at the beginning, the path has hurdles that have her stumbling and falling a few times.
Once, her collection was unsuccessful, leaving her with 3,000 pieces of spring wears, lack of money to fund her next fashion show, and a little bit of tired smile on her face. And as you have guessed, she pulled through.
She has been inducted to the Fashion Walk of Fame in 2002 and since then started expanding categories into her collections. At present, Betsey Johnson has added leather goods, especially handbags, bridal, jewelry, dresses, kids’, swimwear, eyewear, legwear, outerwear, footwear, luggage, fragrance, watches, active wear and home collections. She currently has more than 2,000 stores spread across the US and still counting.
Betsey Johnson seems to have no intention of hanging the measuring tape yet and passing the sewing machine. Recently, Johnson launched girls collection, a children’s wear for fall. It has her style of colorful prints, sequins, faux furs, and ruffles on hoodies, leggings, peplum sweater, skirts and dresses in varied styles of appliques and quilting among others. A dose of punk was also added to her new collection with the inclusion of varsity and moto jackets.
Betsey Johnson is particularly excited with her new collection, which targets ages two to sixteen, as she currently have two little grandkids (that she’s probably planning to dress up).
