Cracking the fashion terms

Fashion Terms

The fashion industry for anyone who is new on the scene is similar to being the “new kid on the block.” Most residents are acquaintances if not BFFs and there are certain times keeping inside the loop of their conversation could get frustrating.

They know about an inside joke and once it comes up you’ll be stuck wearing an awkward smile hoping for someone to clue you in. It’s the same way in fashion. You want to know what’s currently on trend, but certain circumstances make it hard to do – like the unfamiliar jargons, maybe?

To solve the current dilemma, here the top ten words that you would likely come across when talking about fashion. You may want to take notes as this will definitely come in handy when you’re reading fashion articles or simply conversing with another fellow Fashionista.

Applique

Applique simply means embroidering different types of garments together. For example, a lace stitched into a satin gown.

Bespoke

Bespoke is originally exclusively used for men’s clothing in which the pieces are adjusted upon the wearer’s preference.

It is usually in suits that want a customize outfit, thus the familiar bespoke suits.

Bias Cut

Bias cut has the word “bias,” as the fabric is cut to specifically flatter the wearer.

When you wear a “bias cut” dress the fabric cascades over your body to accentuate your curves giving you a flattering shape.

Capsule Collection

The capsule collection consists of staple pieces given to customers where they can choose an outfit by mixing and matching the clothes.

It’s this way, a number of different outfits could be achieved maximizing the use of each piece.

Collection

For couture houses, they are required to present a collection of designs twice a year; thus, we have two major Fashion Weeks.

The collection consists of designs on clothes and accessories that will be sold in stores. Collections have certain clashing or mixing theme on them depending on the designer’s choice.

Haute Couture

You may have almost always come across this term and have an idea, if not full grasp on its meaning.

It is basically a trade of making customized clothing for private customers.

Lookbook

Lookbook is the creative way of presenting your collections without the privilege of the runway.

Raw Edge

The raw edge is what its name says. The edges of the fabric are not sewn in order to give the apparel a natural, unfinished look.

Resort

Apart from the two major seasons, the fashion industry has also sub-seasons and resort is one of those.

It happens from July to August with the collection available in December or January depending on the date it was presented.

Ready-To-Wear

Ready-to-wear garments are those you and I buy in malls. It is basically anything that is not customized.

Seer Sucker

Seer Suckers are light fabrics best worn in summers and springs.

They are usually in light shades, striped, and have a crumpled look.

Silhouette

Silhouette simply refers to the outline of the garment that flatters the different body type and occasion.

Silhouettes range from tight-fitting (bodycon dress) to straight line (shift dress).

White Tie

White Tie is the most formal dress code. No, you don’t swap your black tie ensemble into white colors.

White tie basically means black tailcoats, white waistcoats, white tie, and two running parallel on trousers.
