Like women, men also have sets of body types that they need to consider when it comes to dressing-up. While this topic is easily a taboo for men to talk with over beer, being aware of what body type you’re on would do you wonders, especially during times when you want to look fashionable and presentable at the same time.
It is a common misconception that men can wear anything that they can for as long as they got their upper body and lower body stocked-up and covered, but one thing that they miss out on is the overall look that their choices entail. Yes, they can go about walking with just a pair of khaki shorts and a crisp white shirt, but aesthetically speaking, there’s so much to improve on given the fact that they are aware of what and what not to wear in lieu of the shape of their bodies.
Technically speaking, there are five generic types of body shapes for men — the trapezoid, the rectangle, the inverted pyramid, the oval and the pyramid. Now, let’s delve gently on each of the types.
Trapezoid – These are the types of men who have broad shoulders with generally slim or narrow waist and hip lines. A trapezoid is generally the most-proportioned shape and most of fashion pieces would go well with it, hassle-free. Having this kind of shape should give the owner the head advantage in wearing almost any type of outfits and experimentation would be best carried-out. Make a play on colors, stripes and prints and pick out the ones from where you can go risky and fashionable at the same time.
Inverted Pyramid – Men who have well-planed, broader shoulders with a noticeable slimmer waistline and hips are under this category. Athletes and body builders are the most common types of guys falling under this class, and when owning this body type, the balance of your upper to your lower body must be given the most attention. Wearing V-necks and loudly printed shirts would create an illusion of your shoulders and hips being of the same length. Choosing slim-fit jogger pants and skinny jeans would also aid you in balancing the misproportioned upper body. Avoid any type of clothing that would enlarge your chest and shoulders.
Rectangle – Men with a proportioned length of the shoulders and the waist own a rectangle-shaped upper body and are common to most of the men. Simply, the aim for rectangle body shapes is much like the trapezoid ones. It is best to just refrain from sleeveless fashion pieces and prints that are geometric in nature as this would just highlight your stiff and stocky build.
Triangle – One noticeable characteristic of this type is the dropping shoulders meeting a wide berth on the waist and hips. Like the inverted pyramid, guys must aim to not stress the imbalance of the structure and put effort in correcting it through proper choice of clothes. Picking straight cuts for your chinos and trousers would definitely help you out in drawing an attention to height. For tops, one rule that needs to be followed is to pick garments that are well fitting and tailored to your body shape.
Oval – The shape is focused on the middle part of the body which is the waist or stomach area, shoulders and torsos are on the normal length and width but being overshadowed by the mid-part. Be picky when it comes to wearing garments with lines and always target verticals and pinstripes. Stay away from crow necks and polo necks as this would give you a strangled, imbalanced look on your upper torsos. It will also be a no-no to wear anything noticeable on your hip or stomach area not unless you would want everyone to notice how ill-fitted you are on that particular region.
