Fashion hybrid: Introducing the popover shirt

popover shirt

Skants, skorts? Ring a bell? They are the product of a love affair between skirts and pants and skirts and shorts (lucky skirts, she’s got not one, but two!) they are quite famous, with celebrities rocking them on big events (Emma Watson, the queen of surprises) or when they go attend the Easter Mass (that’s Kendall Jenner over there).

Widely known and warmly accepted, that’s women’s fashion hybrid for you. Different? That’s okay, we love exotic. But when it comes to men’s fashion, exotic is not quite what we’re digging.

Stiff and strict – that is men’s fashion, even with the loosening knots about what is deemed appropriate and manly. And that may be the reason why we’re more watchful in men’s clothing. But that does not mean designers stopped experimenting.

Once upon a time, a designer in the 1960s decided it would be nice to cross-breed the men clothing celebrities namely polo’s and button down shirt. The result? Popover shirt. Famous? Well, that depends on how you look at it.

The problem with popover shirts is the confusion about what type of shirt it really is.( Who would have thought they also experience identity crisis?) When you see one with a short sleeve, ah this one’s probably a polo shirt.

When you see one with a long sleeve, ah, this one’s probably a button down shirt except they forgot the remaining buttons. So the story finishes up with popover shirt relegated at the sales rack.

So to clear the confusion, popover shirt is a mix of polo and button down shirt in which you need to pop over your head in order to wear it, thus the name. Not too dressy and not too casual – it certainly hit a weak spot for being versatile. The maker of this hybrid is none other than designer Michael Bastian of the label Gant. Kudos, sir for being imaginative!

Next time when you stumbled across one, don’t hesitate to buy even just one. Popover is not a splurge, as it could easily be worn from simple hang out to casual dinner dates.
