There are many types of vests, but what kind of vest are we pertaining to? The one worn in a shirt and is better known in its other names of tank top, singlet, and undershirt.
Initially worn by women in the old times, vests have evolved to be a necessity for men. However, with the current media portrayal of vests, this piece of clothing is causing unwanted confusion. What are vests, really?
Let’s start with calling vest a tank top for simplicity. With the recent installation of Magic Mike XXL, we see tank tops as not an undershirt. It is a piece of clothing you can take advantage of through its cut to show off the result of spending a portion of your time in the gym.
Some celebrities also made it into a fashion statement where a blazer – usually – is worn over the tank top without donning a proper shirt first. While this looks good and adored by fans, this is not originally the function of tank tops and certainly not the only reason for why you should buy one.
The basic and foremost purpose of the invention of vest is it acts as a sweat absorbent. It is typically worn with a dress shirt or for casual settings, worn inside a button down shirt. They prevent the sweat sticking in your outerwear in order to provide more comfort and good hygiene.
It also helps avoid staining your outerwears especially in the armpit. It comes in handy when you’re in a business meeting or in a field where the heat is intense. Tank tops will prevent you from turning into a sweaty mess. (Note: sweaty mess and not hot mess.)
Apart from its basic function, it can also act as insulation and help further your cause into looking slimmer.
While you are not being forced to buy a tank top and start wearing it under your shirts, it is still good to remember its benefit, which is keeping yourself clean and well put together.
However, if you decide on buying one, make sure they are cotton, breathable, and with high aerial range.
