Entering the fashion industry requires patience, competitive skills and undying creativity. We often thought of fashion as just the basic sewing of fabrics, dressing up a mannequin and making models walk the runway wearing piles of rag-looking clothes. Establishing a name in this business is as hard as getting your acting abilities into the screening rooms of Hollywood.
There are millions of fashion designers in the world, and yes, they all have the capability to create your bejeweled Sunday dress. However, only a few stand-outs are currently directing trends.
Skills are learned while some are innate, but studying the basics of fashion gives an edge to being known faster than the others. Academic schools have long been offering fashion courses and if you’re someone planning to start this endeavor, below is the list of schools or universities to take into consideration.

Central Saint Martins, London – Central Saint Martins’ graduate program is the most esteemed in the world, and much of that is derived from Professor Louise Wilson, who passed away last May 2014. The most notable students have tended to the graduate program, although the undergrad and graduate schools are of the same level. Students and alumni focus on creative thinking and less on the mercantile aspects of the fashion world. Undergraduate programs include women’s wear, menswear, knitwear, jewelry design, fashion design with marketing and fashion journalism.

Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Belgium – The Royal Academy is easily known as one of the most elite fashion schools in the world. It’s known for its earnest students, where many drop out because they can’t handle the work load. After the monstrous Antwerp Six placed the school on the fashion map in the early 1980s, it has continued to produce the finest and most esteemed sets of fashion designer neophytes. If you’re exceptionally devoted, with an empirical, innovative and vanguard sensitivity, this may be the place for you. The sole program focus is on intensive fashion design courses.
La Cambre, Belgium – A more traditional art school mutually exclusive to the Antwerp school with a focus on French design, La Cambre alumni have gone on to work in the uppermost positions of famous fashion houses like Lanvin, Chanel, Balenciaga and Maison Martin Margiela. Styling and Fashion Design are the main courses offered. Students are required to speak French, though.

Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles – With a 95% success rate in getting employed after education, the school credits its diminutive class size (about 15 people per course) to its professors’ intellect in giving each enrollee the tending they deserve. Many recent graduates hold top positions in brands focused on sportswear, outer apparel and ready-to-wear clothing items.

Bunka Fashion College, Tokyo – Bunka most notably came into the limelight in the 1960s when its graduates started showing-off in Paris. It’s now known for Japanese risqué designs and bold approaches in fashion, rounded out by merchandising and technology programs. More advanced courses include Fashion Technology, Fashion Textiles and Marketing and Distribution.
