Today we’re setting aside the world of high-end fabrics and the kingdom of fancy footwear, because today we’re going down the basics of the basics of beauty routine – the nail shapes.
We often hear about people gushing over the latest hair trends, the coveted red carpet couture pieces, or even the most in nail arts, but less so we hear from people talking about their nail shapes.
Okay, if you put it like that, it does sound very trivial; however, this underappreciated part of beauty routine could actually be the judge to your personality – and the measurement on how much a true fashion devotee you are. (Because imagine, you even know the trendiest nail shape!)
It has been forewarned that even if you have the best outfit out there, people will judge you if there are smidges of dirt under your nails, because it only means you only clean the outside.
It is also true for the industry. However, it’s not the smidges of dirt they will see, but your yesterday’s season nail shape.
On a question imposed to the two top experts of the industry – Sarah Gibson Tuttle (founder of Olive & June indie salon) and Samira Far (founder of Bellacures LA-based luxe salon chain) – the hottest nail shape for 2015 is squoval.
Squoval is the hybrid of the words “square” and “oval” and has been one of the most common nail shapes of all time along with square, pointed, round, and oval. However, not all nail technicians have these in their textbooks.
Filing squoval nail shape, you have to start with square. From there, you angle the file underneath the straight side walls, so you can start filing back and forth to remove the edges and give the nail shape a softer look. However, don’t do overdo filing your nails or else it will end up oval.
Last year has been the time for bold and unexpected choices from colors to shapes so now, “it’s all about the new neutrals and a more ladylike squoval to elongate the fingers for a more feminine look,” according to Tuttle on an article by Alina Gonzalez about the latest nail shape trend.
Fortunately, squoval is a very versatile nail shape, so it can work out from long thin fingers to short stubbly ones.
