Starting out as a simple clothing line for men, the Original Penguin has been cacophonic in the fashion industry since the 1950s to the 1960s. Originally, the brand’s name was Munsingwear, which focused on military garments and underwear for Minneapolis residents until the legendary release of its now famous golf shirts.

The iconic Penguin logo is the brainchild of Munsingwear’s ad specialists to combat the competitive Lacoste crocodile patches.
Soon after the creation of the cutesy Penguin logos for the brand, celebrities such as Bob Hope and Bing Crosby popularized it in mainstream fashion. The boom of the Original Penguin golf shirts became more significant when golfers Dow Finsterwald, Jack Burke, Jr. and Andrew Palmer sported the outfit and exposed it more to their hordes of followers.
Time passed and the Original Penguin golf shirts have been a staple not just for men who play the sport, but also as a form of casual wear. With the legacy that the brand left behind, it has never been an issue to keep the company’s heart beating until Perry Ellis International purchased the brand in 1996.
Currently, Penguin has established itself as a relevant tool in dressing men with their comprehensive line of sportswear and is now dotting the whole planet with national and international outlets. Some of the stores having their brands on the shelves are Saks Fifth Avenue, Urban Outfitters, Neiman Marcus, Barney’s New York, Nordstrom and David Jones.
The eponymous Penguin golf shirts are now comprised of apparels not only suited to men, but women and children as well. Recently, the Original Penguin divided their whole line into the Original Label and the Black Label, which expanded into footwear, beachwear, sunglasses, bags, belts and even wallets and cardholders.
